COLORADO SPRINGS — The Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) is investigating after three grass fires broke out at the same time in the north part of the city Sunday.

In its latest update, CSFD said the department received its first call about a grass fire at Fillmore Street and I-25 around 12:45 p.m. Just five minutes later, at 12:50 p.m., the department was notified about another grass fire near Rockrimmon Boulevard and I-25.

While crews worked on the first two fires, firefighters noticed a large column of smoke coming from Interquest Parkway and I-25.

Once crews arrived at the third fire, they found Air Force Academy fire personnel battling the blaze.

Despite being contained within an hour, approximately 38 acres of grass were burnt. Nearby businesses, including Great Wolf Lodge, were evacuated.

All three fires are now under investigation. No injuries have been reported and evacuation orders have since been lifted.

According to CSFD, the fires are off I-25. People are asked to avoid the area.

FOX21 is on the way to the scene and will provide updates.

The fires come just a few hours after CSFD reminded residents about Sunday’s Red Flag Warning. Gusty winds and low humidity contribute to a high fire danger.

“Drought and wind are an extremely bad combo,” CSFD wrote. “Please be fire safe and report smoke early. Dispose of cigarette butts properly!”

FOX21 Meteorologist Ashley Nanfria also took to social media Sunday morning to stress the increased fire danger.

“A Red Flag Warning has been issued today as winds pick up this afternoon,” she wrote. “Gusts could be up to 40 MPH or more at times.”
