The Pueblo County Hornets are riding their Region One win into the state tournament this week.
“Our team getting that win, and getting a lot of individual wins, is a big momentum swing for us,” junior Christopher Fasano said.
“So, we put it all together. We have shown, in the past, the most state champions, the most guys in the state final ever in Colorado history. So, this is the week we show what we really are,” senior Dante Garcia said.
The Hornets will be represented by 10 wrestlers this weekend. The hopes of a third straight state title are looming over the mat, but the team knows they cannot let that get in the way. They need to take it one match at a time.
“It just gives us the opportunity to showcase what we have been doing. It is really special and really rewarding when we do what we are supposed to do,” junior Jax Garoutte said.
“We all know we want this state title to win. But we all just need to do what we need to do and just do our own thing and we will be fine,” junior Jayson Davis said.
And it all comes down to this weekend.
“All these tournaments don’t matter. This is the one that matters. This is one, this is the tournament everyone looks at because this is the one people remember. This is it,” junior Nathan Bonham said.
“They exceeded at regionals. They exceeded in the practices leading up to the state tournament. They are pretty confident they are ready. It is just the whole season coming together,” County head coach Joel Soto said.
