Only 48 more minutes, one more game, decide the 4A Pikes Peak League Champ as the Pueblo West Cyclones host the Rampart Rams. Both teams are 4-0 in league play.
“It’s going to be fun,” Pueblo West senior linebacker Martin Trujillo said. “Definitely the most competition we’ve had in the past few weeks.”
The Cyclones are fully aware of what’s at stake, and a win would be their first league title with Head Coach Clint Buderus.
“They just know what’s on the line,” Buderus said. “It’s senior night and all that stuff. It’s their last home game under the lights, so there’s been a little different tempo at practice this week.”
Pueblo West will need to tame the running Rams of Rampart High School, a task no team in the league has been able to do.
“We’ve just got to slow them down,” Buderus said. “I don’t know if you can stop those backs, their quarterback and tailback, but they’re a dang good football team. We’re going to have our hands full.”
“It’s not going to be like the last few weeks, where it’s two quarters and the starters are out,” Trujillo said. “We’re definitely going to be going four quarters with this team, because they’re a tougher team.”
Like the Rams, no team in the league has been able to stop the Cyclones. They’ve outscored their last four opponents 187-35.
“Our defense has done a great job all and year and gave us a lot of opportunities on the offensive side of the ball to score points,” Buderus said. “We just got to keep improving and getting better.”
The scene couldn’t be set any better as the Cyclones play in front of the home crowd for a league title.
“It’s exciting, but it’s exciting to do it with my brothers,” Trujillio said.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday from Pueblo West High School.
