One local veteran’s path to the U.S. Senior Open at the Broadmoor started with giving back.
“I may not be the oldest one here, but I probably am in the top ten,” volunteer Joe Gray said.
This U.S. Senior Open marks 84-year-old Gray’s third golf championship.
“He’s a great example of what really a perfect volunteer is,” volunteer manager Megan Gormley said. “He has a great attitude, he loves to give back, he is a veteran, so he understands the importance of helping out your community.”
Gray said he’s where he is today thanks to always putting service above self.
“There is so much need in this town,” he said. “There is so much need in every town, so if you get a chance to volunteer, to help your fellow man or your fellow woman, do that.”
Gray is one of 2,600 volunteers at the U.S. Senior Open. They help with things like crowd control, uniform pickup, and player registration.
