Volunteers make holiday cards for veterans in Colorado nursing homes

A group of volunteers is trying to bring joy to veterans in nursing homes in a heartfelt way.

“What we’re doing is bringing them smiles,” retired Army Col. Nanette Brede said. “Paper smiles with a hug in the middle.”

The group delivers holiday and birthday cards to about 400 veterans in the five state-run nursing homes across Colorado.

As a 20-year Army veteran herself, Brede feels like it’s her duty to give back to others who have served our country.

“In many cases, this is the only card that some of these people receive,” Brede said. “It’s a way of being thanked or remembered for their service, or just remembered for being a good person.”

They also help other nonprofit organizations, like the Ronald McDonald House.

The group made 1,200 cards on Sunday alone.
