COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — An unusual dragonfly has been spotted in Cheyenne Mountain State Park.

Park officials said an entomologist was “bug watching” along a section of the Zook trail when he spotted a Red Rock Skimmer. The colorful dragonfly has never been seen before in Colorado, according to park officials.

The dragonflies are usually found in rocky streams in the foothills of New Mexico, Arizona, southern California, and Nevada. Park officials said due to the recent rainfall, a flowing creek has developed in a typically dry area of the park, creating the perfect habitat for the Red Rock Skimmer.

If you’re interested in trying bug watching, the park offers educational programs about wildlife and insects throughout the summer. Click here for more information.
