A Colorado State Patrol trooper was hit and killed by a car during a blizzard in northern Colorado Wednesday morning.

The Colorado State Patrol said Cpl. Daniel Groves, 52, was hit around 11:20 a.m. on Interstate 76 near Roggen in Weld County. Groves was helping a car that had slid off the roadway when another driver lost control and slid into him.

Groves was taken to the hospital, where he was declared dead.

The man who hit him has been identified as John Carpenter, 58, of Centennial. He was hospitalized with moderate injuries. Troopers said high speed in poor driving conditions is being investigated as a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation. No charges have been filed.

Groves began his career with the Colorado State Patrol in July 2007. He is survived by his partner of two years.
