Charges have been filed against a driver accused of hitting and killing a Colorado State Patrol trooper during the March blizzard in Weld County.

Cpl. Daniel Groves was killed in the crash, which happened March 13 on Interstate 76 near Roggen. State patrol said Groves was helping a driver that had slid off the road when John Carpenter lost control and slid into him.

Carpenter, 58, sustained moderate injuries. He is now charged with careless driving causing death and failure to exercise due care when approaching a stationary vehicle, resulting in death.

An advisement hearing is set for May 29.
