COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Pikes Peak region is known for its incredible trails and climbing, but there’s some things you should know before heading outdoors.
“I think the important thing is to have a few essentials in your backpack,” Mountain Chalet employee Chris Duval said.
Things like snacks or a water bottle could make all the difference when faced with a dangerous situation.
“The biggest thing to remember is always in this environment we’re very dry, so always make sure you have enough water and be hydrated,” hiking guide Bob Falcone said.
And when bad weather hits, it’s important to be dressed appropriately.
“As summer comes on and we have the monsoons and the heavy rains, you want to make sure you have some kind of rain gear. Whether it’s a poncho or something like that,” Falcone said.
And cotton is a big no-no.
“A wool based material or one of the synthetic materials will keep you warm even when it gets wet,” said Duval.
But, communication could be the difference between life and death.
“Somebody should know when you’re leaving, where you’re going and what time to expect you back,” Duval said.
And if you do end up lost or stuck on a high angle, simply call 911.
“Just call 911 and whether you get the city police department, the fire department, the sheriff’s office, they’ll connect you or put the right people out to you whether it’s search and rescue or somebody like that to come out and take care of getting you out of whatever situation you’re in,” Falcone said.
If you do end up having to call for help, one key thing is knowing where you are and how to tell authorities where to find you.
