COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — We have some good news for all you hikers out there.

There’s a new trail in Colorado Springs, and it leads to the highest point in the city’s park system, reaching 8,020 feet in elevation at the top. It’s called the Mount Muscoco Trail. It’s located in the North Cheyenne Cañon Park. Hikers can park near the Mt. Cutler Trail and connect to the trail from there.

This new path is about four miles round trip. It’s ranked at an intermediate level, but hiking experts say it’s sure to offer new challenges and stunning views from the top.

After years of planning and lots of volunteer work, the Mount Muscoco trail is open for hikers to explore.

“One of my goals was to get this done so more people could experience it, and to make it a safer trail,” Bob Falcone, President of Friends of the Cheyenne Cañon, said.

Mayor John Suthers, several council members and multiple volunteers came out for the official trail dedication.

“This is 3,500 feet of new trail for citizens of the Pikes Peak Region to enjoy,” Suthers said.

This path gives outdoors enthusiasts a better look of the canyon.

“The route takes you over the south canyon. That’s where a lot of people don’t get to see, because that’s where Seven Falls is, and that’s private property so you don’t get to look down into the south canyon,” Falcone said. “Then it takes you back over to the north canyon so you get to look at the north side of the park and you can look over at the peaks there, like Mays Peak, Buckhorn and those and you work your way to the top, and the views from the top are just incredible.”

Others say they love how quickly you can get away from it all.

“You’re a five minute drive from Colorado Springs, and within 30 to 40 minutes you feel like you are in the middle of the wilderness and for me that is just an incredible experience to enjoy while you are in the City of Colorado Springs,” David Deitemeyer, Park Planner for the Colorado Springs Parks Department, said.

Falcone wants to remind people to always be prepared when you go out hiking. Bring a rain jacket and water, and definitely be aware of thunderstorms.
