COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — Overdrive Raceway is a brand new, two-story indoor go-kart track that officially opens Saturday.
While it’s a cool place to take the family, it’s also doing amazing things for veterans.
Matt Spang is a 7-year veteran of the military; he’s also a double amputee.
“I don’t really expect to be able to be come to places like this, because there’s a certain, I don’t have an ankle, so it’s hard for me to push on the pedal,” said Spang.
Newly designed go karts with hand controls changes all of that.
“Hand controls allow me to race with other people and beat them,” said Spang.
He does beat them – including me when we raced.
The owner of Overdrive, Jim Mundle, is also a double amputee, so he understands how important this is.
“We have a big need for this. These are guys that want to come out and have fun with their friends and family and not just be a spectator,” said Mundle.
The guys like this race, because it allows them to be competitive.
“I like to push myself and I like to go fast. I have a fast car that I drive and it just really excites me that I can come here and be able to race a go kart against an able bodied person,” said Spang.
Having something like this can be life changing for these guys.
“It allows me to get out of the house and it allows me to be more social with my friends and get out and not just be a hermit at home,” said Spang.
