The Spring Fire has destroyed more than 100 homes in the Forbes Park area of Costilla County.
Heather Kindrick went to a community meeting at Centennial High School in San Luis. FOX21 caught up with her in Fort Garland.
Colorado was finally home for Kindrick.
“I had a dream of coming to Colorado for a long time,” she said. “I saved up a lot of money, and within two weeks it’s just taken from me.”
Monday afternoon, Kindrick got the news: her home was gone.
“It’s one thing, you see that on TV all the time, you know, and you’re like ‘Oh my god. My heart goes out to them people,'” she said. “But when it happens to you, you can’t even put it in words. You can’t even deal with it. You can’t even begin to deal with it.”
Now she’s finding a silver lining.
“Like even though your house may be gone, it’s really good to see the community come together like this,” she said. “Because I’ve been in a lot of places and they probably would not come together like this. This is a very special town.”
She also commends the fire crews for their hard work.
“How can you deal with that?,” she said. “But somehow they did it and zero lives were taken. So they did an amazingly good job.”
