The first Captain D’s location to open in Colorado since 1995 now calls Powers Boulevard home.
The owner is no stranger to the restaurant business and knows a thing or two about service, as he also fought for our country.
Lester Nowell is a Vietnam War veteran.
“Military teaches you basically to follow orders and that everything has a method to it and reason for it,” Nowell said.
Originally from south Georgia, Nowell now calls himself a Colorado Springs local.
When FOX21 asked Nowell what made him move to Colorado Springs, he said, “To be honest with you, you might not want it on camera, but it was I got tired of sweating and blowing gnats.“
Nowell has been a Captain D’s franchisee for the past 30 years.
“My wife and I were looking for an opportunity, and we never even thought about restaurants,” he said. “We looked at franchising an ACE Hardware and then over a period of time it evolved into a possibility of going into the food business, and everybody eats, so that’s a good business to be in.”
The Nowells own one Captain D’s in Pueblo, and this newest location makes their fourth in Colorado Springs.
“Our entire family is involved with the business, and we just made the decision that if our kids take it over, we would like to retire, and we would like for them to have a store on Powers because this is probably the growingest area in the country,“ Nowell said.
Nowell said the military gave him the main ingredients to being a successful business owner, but he’s also digested a lot along the way.
“Anybody that’s ever thought about getting into the business, and they’re married, and they do it together, my wife and I finally figured out that if she runs the office, I run the stores,” Nowell said. “We stay out of each other’s hair, and that works.”
