Two pets were killed and a firefighter was injured in a house fire in central Colorado Springs Sunday, according to the fire department.

The fire started around 6:40 p.m. at a home on Revere Lane, which is in the area of Constitution Avenue and Union Boulevard. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy black smoke and flames coming from the back of the house. The homeowner had escaped, but told firefighters her pets were still inside. Firefighters were able to rescue a dog and one cat, but another cat and a tortoise died.

The fire department said a firefighter was injured when a coupling came loose from a hydrant and hit him, knocking him from his feet. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was able to return to work later that evening.

Due to substantial fire damage in the room where the fire started, investigators were unable to determine the cause of the fire.
