Two people were killed in separate crashes on Interstate 25 just north of Pueblo on Tuesday.

The Colorado State Patrol said the first crash happened around 10:35 a.m. near mile marker 113, which is about nine miles north of Pueblo. A 2011 Jeep Wrangler was headed northbound when the backseat passenger jumped out. He landed on the highway and was hit by a semi-truck that was unable to stop.

The man who jumped, 21-year-old Jose Duran of Valvillo, Mexico, died on the scene.

Troopers said the semi-truck driver, Joseph Miller of Denver, was not injured.

The second crash happened about two hours later near near mile marker 109, about four miles south of the first crash. Troopers said a semi-truck failed to slow down and hit several cars that were stopped in traffic due to the previous crash.

The passenger of one of the cars, 61-year-old Steven Aikman, died on the scene. Troopers said several other people were hospitalized with various injuries.

Troopers said charges against the semi-truck driver are pending.
