Restaurant Report Card: One Colorado Springs Chinese restaurant with six violations

Local

In this week’s Restaurant Report Card, a Colorado Springs Chinese restaurant with six health code violations on their last inspection, and a Filipino spot with zero violations in years.

Located at Barnes Road and Oro Blanco Drive, near Doherty High School, New China Kitchen II’s last health inspection on April 26 revealed five critical violations and one non-critical violation, including:

  • A cook spotted touching his face then touching chicken with the same bare hand.
  • Utensils used for preparing food stored hanging inside a bucket used for waste.
  • Food being held at dangerous temperatures.

This is why New China Kitchen II fails our Restaurant Report Card.

We reached out to the manager. She did not want to go on camera but told us a new employee was working. They’re providing extra training and meeting with all staff to ensure safety standards are met.

Instead, take a tasty trip to the Philippines. You-Ka Cafe will have you in lumpia love.

Located on Bloomington Street near the Target on Powers Boulevard, You-Ka Cafe hasn’t had a violation since at least 2015.

Family-owned and operated for more than three years now, Emilou is the mastermind. Her husband Gregg is the support, and their two daughters even work on the line too.

“It takes a lot of work, a lot of sacrifice and commitment to just wanting to do the right things,” Gregg said. “We close at 8:00 but we’re here until 10:00 or 10:30 at night, just ensuring the place is clean and is presentable, because that’s important. We hold ourselves to that.”

This is why You-Ka Cafe passes our Restaurant Report Card.

The five restaurants making our honor roll for food safety:

1. You-Ka Cafe

2. Carrabba’s Italian Grill – Geyser Drive location

3. Deluxe Wings

4. Pizzeria Rustica

5. Sushi Avenue

El Paso County Public Health recently updated its health inspection database. It now uses a risk index system ranging from excellent to unacceptable. Everything is color-coordinated and much easier to understand.

New China Kitchen II’s rating was marginal. However, their health inspection on November 13 rated excellent.
