A Pueblo man was killed and a woman was injured in a motorcycle crash in Custer County Saturday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. on Highway 96 about eight miles east of Westcliffe. Troopers said the driver, 53-year-old Robert Herrera of Pueblo, lost control, and the motorcycle went off the road. Herrera and the passenger, 34-year-old Margaret Gallegos of Pueblo, were both ejected.

Herrera died on the scene. Gallegos sustained minor injuries. Troopers said neither person was wearing a helmet.

Troopers said an off-duty airman, an off-duty Custer County deputy, an off-duty Custer County dispatcher, and a Westcliffe woman all performed CPR on Herrara as they waited for first responders to arrive.

Troopers said Herrera and Gallegos were riding in a group of about 40 other motorcycles with a club from Pueblo. Two of the other motorcycles crashed just after this crash, but the riders left before troopers arrived.

Troopers said speed and alcohol and marijuana intoxication were likely factors in the crash.
