The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office has responded to a recent news story in The Denver Post claiming that deputies fatally beat an inmate after he flipped them off at the Pueblo County Jail in March 2016.

According to Gayle Perez with the Sheriff’s Office, she has yet to be served with the complaint.

“The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough investigation of Joseph Jaramillo’s brief incarceration and a forensic autopsy was performed which determined the cause and manner of Jaramillo’s death,” officials said in a statement.

A medical examiner’s report concluded the death of Jaramillo, a former Pueblo County Jail inmate who later died at a Denver hospital, was the result of natural causes.

“Throughout the investigative process, Sheriff’s Officials maintained contact with the Jaramillo family’s legal representative to keep them apprised of the ongoing investigation. This included a review of videos as well as deputy and medical officer reports,” officials said.

The Sheriff’s Office says a complete copy of the investigation, including an autopsy report and findings, was made available to the Jaramillo family’s legal representative on June 14, 2016.
