Paralympian surprises 5th grade class with in-person visit

A 5th grade class at West Elementary in Colorado Springs got a big surprise Tuesday.

This year Ms. Yenne’s class took part in a national program called Classroom Champions. The program pairs an Olympic or Paralympic athlete with a class that serves as a mentor to students.

Usually, the 5th graders just chat with their Olympian online but Tuesday their mentor Paralympic Swimmer Sophia Herzog dropped by.

“It was amazing because our teacher kind of lied to us and told us we were going to video chat her live, but she walked in the room and everybody was speechless that she came in,” said Hayden Fleming, a 5th grade Student at West Elementary.

The goal of Classroom Champions is to teach students about goal setting, diversity and perseverance.
