A multimillion-dollar campaign is underway to build a new and larger Ronald McDonald House in Colorado Springs.
The plan is to build it on the Memorial North campus on Briargate Parkway in northern Colorado Springs. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado hopes to open the house by spring 2019, when the children’s hospital being built just a short walk away opens its doors.
The new house will be about four times the size of the original, which is near Memorial Central near downtown Colorado Springs.
“It’s going to be hard to sell it, but we need to, and it’s going to be exciting as well to have bigger spaces for the families,” Beth Alessio, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado, said.
Morgan and Eddie Phillips, who spent four months staying at the downtown-area house after their twin boys were born premature, said it was a blessing they found the home.
“To be able to walk across and be so close to our boys and not have to leave them, the few times I did go back home, it was really emotionally hard for me to leave them,” Morgan Phillips said.
The original house currently serves about 350 families a year, with plans to serve at least 500 at the new one.
