New Life Church talks safety after bombings in Sri Lanka

Several hundred people were killed in Sri Lanka Sunday after a series of bombs went off in hotels and churches.

“It was very personal to us, so we prayed for their healing and for justice,” said Pastor Brady Boyd of New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

The bombings happened on Easter Sunday. Three of the bombs went off in Christian churches.

“I was horrified first of all because this is the holiest day in the church calendar,” Boyd said.

Boyd said when something like this happens in other churches anywhere in the world, they feel the vulnerability creep back in. In December 2007, a gunman walked onto New Life’s property and killed two teenage girls and wounded several others.

“I think every church in America needs to take security more seriously,” Boyd said.

He said since the shooting they have increased their security. They have trained volunteers and police always monitoring the church during services.

“We have a very sophisticated security plan that we operate under every time we gather,” Boyd said.
