Motorcyclist killed in collision with car on I-25; driver facing charges

A driver is facing charges after he hit and killed a motorcyclist on Interstate 25 Thursday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol. 

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at the South Academy Boulevard interchange. Troopers said a Volkswagen GTI was headed northbound on the Interstate 25 on-ramp when it passed another vehicle on the left. While passing, it went into the far left lane and cut off a Harley-Davidson that was also headed northbound.

The driver of the motorcycle, 54-year-old Michael Melanson of Littleton, was ejected. He died on the scene. Troopers said he was wearing a helmet.

The driver of the Volkswagen, 34-year-old James Fritz of Littleton, was not injured. He is charged with vehicular homicide. 

CORRECTION: Troopers originally said Melanson was not wearing a helmet, but they issued a correction Friday afternoon. This story has been updated with the latest information.
