A motorcyclist was killed after he slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting a deer on Highway 50 in Chaffee County Sunday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

The crash happened around 1 p.m. just west of Poncha Springs. Troopers said the motorcyclist was headed west on Highway 50 when a deer entered the road in front of him. The motorcyclist hit the brakes, and the bike spun out of control. The motorcyclist was ejected and hit the side of a camper that was headed eastbound.

The motorcyclist, Michael Conway of Westcliffe, died on the scene. Troopers said he was wearing a helmet.

Troopers said drugs and alcohol are not considered factors in the crash.
