The Colorado Springs Police Department along with other law enforcement across the nation met in Washington D.C. to honor fallen officers from across the country.
“We all take an oath that we are willing to do but hope we never have to do,” said Sgt. Shawn Peterson, with CSPD.
National Peace Officer day was on Wednesday. Back here at home, CSPD is hosting their own memorial to honor the week at Memorial Park.
“It’s a real honor and privilege to be a police officer in this community,” said Sgt. Peterson.
The memorial is dedicated to 32 Pikes Peak Region Officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our community.
On average in the United States, one law enforcement officer is killed in the line of duty every 57 hours. In total, nearly 21,000 have been killed in the U.S..
The ceremony starts at 10 a.m. at Memorial Park Friday.
