#girlcrush: Local mom bloggers hope to build community

Two Colorado Springs moms joined forces to start a blog, hoping to build a sisterhood of mothers.

Tonya Jones and Tara Odendahl are, in fact, sisters. Tonya has two boys and Tara is a mother of four kids, including 4-year-old twins.

When Tara moved from Iowa to Colorado Springs, where Tonya was already living, she saw a need in this community, so the two decided to fill it.

“I think just the community is so important, especially in motherhood,” said Tara.

In 2015 they launched the Colorado Springs moms-blog

“Our vision is really to bring moms together to support moms who are local and really to help moms and parents fall in love with our city,” said Tonya.

The website is written by local moms for local moms. They hope to be a one-stop shop for things like Easter egg hunts, sports programs and pediatricians.

“Really the first six to nine months we were just crossing our fingers trying to get our bearings and learning all the little details of trying to make this thing work,” recalled Tonya.

So far it has been working. The venture was profitable within the first year and the website garners about 40,000 views a month.

“Nothing is ever perfect with our business but it’s here to be a resource and support and I think that’s the most important thing,” said Tonya.

For other moms who also have big dreams, they have a strong message.

“You only live once and you only have one opportunity to make a difference in the world,” said Tara.

The blog is hosting a Cookies with Santa at Rocky Mountain PBS on Sunday. You can buy tickets here.
