Fountain-Fort Carson High School student Rachel Johnson is building a veterans memorial garden for a class project.
According to the school, Johnson is in several AP classes and is being considered for a Boettcher finalist. The school said she is an agriculture sciences student and wants to study in that field in college.
Johnson decided to build and install the garden outside the front of the school. She asked 30 of her fellow students help get the soil ready to plant the flowers.
“I really just wanted to find a way to honor those who served, and felt what better way to use my passion for landscaping and horticulture to be able to bring that attention here and to really give back to the community,” Johnson said.
Johnson said she also got some of the engineering and tech ed kids in her school involved to help make some metal displays, such as flags and plaques, to go in the garden.
The garden will eventually be open to the public. The ribbon cutting and dedication event will be sometime around Memorial Day weekend.
