County extends health plan benefits for families of employees killed in the line of duty

An El Paso County board has adopted a plan that will extend the amount of time spouses and children of employees killed in the line of duty receive healthcare benefits.

Effective immediately, the healthcare, dental, and vision benefits in place at the time of the employee’s death will be preserved for a full year at no cost to the dependents.

County officials started working on changes to the plan immediately after the death of Detective Micah Flick, who was shot and killed while trying to make an arrest on February 5.

Previously, health insurance benefits were only extended to the end of the month in which the employee died.
