The community came together Thursday in Pueblo to say goodbye to a Las Animas County Sheriff’s Sergeant killed in the line of duty.

Sgt. Matthew Moreno, 37, died in a car crash while responding to a disturbance call on December 12. Taelor Roybal, 23, and her 1-year-old son, Ezekiel, were also killed in the crash.

On Thursday morning, a private funeral service for family and friends was held at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. Afterward, a law enforcement foot procession escorted Moreno and his family to Pueblo’s Memorial Hall for Moreno’s memorial service.

“He was so special to me,” said EMS Chief and Deputy Sheriff Dan Moynihan of the Trinidad Ambulance District. “I love working with him, and he was my brother. God bless you, Matt,”

Moreno, also a volunteer firefighter and EMT, is survived by his two daughters and one stepson. He was a member of the Las Animas County Sheriff’s Office for five years.

“He was a champion of our community and a highly respected member of our team,” Las Animas County Sheriff Derek Navarette said. “He will never be forgotten. Rest easy, Matt. We have the watch from here.”

The other family who lost loved ones in the crash said the funerals for Roybal and her son Ezekiel will be happening Friday, but they asked that media not be present, and FOX21 will respect that.
