Colorado Springs Utilities is expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

The utility on Tuesday announced the start of two utility-scale solar projects that will significantly increase the amount of renewable energy available to power the Pikes Peak region.

The projects will total 95 megawatts, adding enough solar energy to power about 30,000 homes annually and increase the utility’s solar energy offering to 130 megawatts.

The utility said the peak use of electricity in Colorado Springs typically occurs in the afternoon on hot, sunny days, which happens to coincide with the prime time for solar generation.
