City of Colorado Springs proposes new idea when it comes to photography in the park

COLORADO SPRINGS — The city of Colorado Springs has proposed an idea to help regulate and keep an eye on who is coming in and out of the park for pictures. But the city has implemented a change for businesses that use parts of the parks for profit.

“If you’re taking pictures for a business, you are not in this mix. Period. Just know that it’s not part of this piece,” Karen Palus, the Parks, Recreation and Cultural Service Director for the City of Colorado Springs said.

Palus said there had been wrong information being passed around town when it comes to the new Procedures and Policies of the park. She said as of now, the requirement to have a permit only applies to commercial entities.

“This only applies to those doing business in Garden of the Gods, such as tours, rock climbing, and biking tours. It does not apply to local photographers,” Palus said.

According to the Palus, people doing commercial photography, like movies or commercials, will be required to get a permit. She said that policy has been in place for a while.

She said they have held off on implementing an everyday type of photography permit. That type of photography includes senior pictures, engagement photos, etc.

Some local photographers are upset, even starting a petition to stop it.

Again, nothing is set in stone yet regarding the proposal.
