The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is morning the loss of one of its giraffes, Uzuri.
Zoo staff said the 17-year-old giraffe struggled with various medical challenges throughout her life, but recently, she became very unstable on her back feet, likely due to musculoskeletal issues. The team gave her pain medication, anti-inflammatories, and laser therapy, but her health still worsened. She started to refuse her favorite treats and she refused to take medicine.
Because of her declining condition, the team made the difficult decision to euthanize her Friday.
Uzuri was born at the zoo in 2001. She was known for her characteristic dangling tongue.
“She was also a favorite of staff, and she was always eager to take lettuce snacks from guests,” the zoo said in a Facebook post. “We will all miss her dearly.”
