The Cañon City Police Department is encouraging residents to use a free online system called ReportIt, which helps keep track of valuable personal property.

ReportIt is a secure online service which allows people to record serial numbers and upload images for phones, electronics, and other valuables. If any of your items are stolen, having the information accurate and ready will help in identifying your property.

ReportIt is part of LeadsOnline, the online system that works with police nationwide to track and recover stolen property. The Cañon City Police Department has acquired license for use of LeadsOnline to help track and recover stolen property, including everything from jewelry to sporting equipment.

The system allows detectives to search for the items using a variety of parameters, including item descriptions and serial numbers. Police say when an item is sold to a pawn or secondhand shop, the product information is entered in the LeadsOnline database and is immediately seen by participating law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Officials say many departments have used LeadsOnline and have reported success using the online investigations systems.
