Bear gets stuck in Colorado Springs storm drain, escapes through manhole cover

Local

A bear is back in the forest where it belongs after it was stuck in a Colorado Springs storm drain Thursday.

The bear, which was 3 to 4 years old and weighed about 250 pounds, found itself in a storm drain near Bear Creek Park Thursday afternoon. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers said the bear may have picked this neighborhood because of a nearby dumpster that contained branches full of berries.

CPW officers didn’t want to handle the bear, because if they did, it would have been tagged, and next time it got in trouble, it would have to be euthanized.

Instead, officers removed a manhole cover. Soon, the bear made its way out and ran off into the woods. A CPW officer fired a non-lethal rubber slug at it as officers chased it into an open space.
