The Cañon City Police Department is providing further insight to a barricade situation that took place Monday, June 25.
According to city officials, the police department, along with the Fremont Sheriff’s Office, dealt with a barricaded suspect, later identified as Riley Zaragoza, in the area of High Street and North 5th Street.
Nearby streets were blocked off and residents of the apartment complex were evacuated to a nearby school.
After negotiations were attempted, officers entered the apartment where Zaragoza was taken into custody without incident.
Zaragoza was charged with first-degree assault for strangulation, second-degree assault, possession of a weapon by previous offender, aggravated intimidation of a witness, reckless endangerment, child abuse, and failure to leave premises upon request.
