Woodland Park School District RE-2 announced Tuesday afternoon that all schools in the district will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 28 due to a “threat deemed credible by the Woodland Park Police Department. This also includes all activities and athletics.
Officials say all lost educational time will be made up through extending the school day and/or adding days to the school year.
According to officials, graffiti was found in a girls restroom at the high school on Friday, Feb. 23.
“The District will continue to evaluate and collaborate with local law enforcement regarding this ongoing investigation,” officials said on Facebook.
“Even if a student thinks that this is funny, it’s not. We take it all seriously,” said district official Stacy Schubloom. “It affects everyone. It has affected the entire district. It has affected the entire community. We have parents that are very concerned about the safety of their kids. They have kids that are scared to come to school. So we decided as a whole to cancel all school tomorrow.”
More details will be released as they become available.
The Woodland Park Police Department is offering a $500 reward for information leading to the identification of the person responsible. If you have any information, contact the police department at 719-687-9262 or Safe2Tell at 1-877-542-7233.
“The safety and security of our students and staff remains a top priority,” the district said.
However the Woodland Park campus of Colorado Springs Christian School remains open.
The Executive Director of the schools sent the following statement:
We have been informed that the Woodland Park High School has received a threat and has closed school tomorrow, February 28, 2018. Since safety is our number one priority at CSCS, we are proactively increasing our security presence tomorrow while school is in session. Our school has received no threat of any kind, but we want our CSCS staff, students, and families to feel safe. In addition, as a courtesy to CSCS our Woodland Park Police department will provide a police presence on our campus, along with our security officer, throughout the whole school day. We are appreciative of their service to our school and families. Once again, there has been no threat to our school, but we want you to be aware of the security presence when you arrive.
