Exciting things are happening at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Two newborn giraffes could make southern Colorado their new home.
While one giraffe is for sure a mama-to-be this spring, the other, Laikipia, has only shown positive on one voluntary blood draw. Two are needed to confirm a pregnancy.
While the voluntary blood draw didn’t work Friday, veterinary staff said they’re almost certain she’s mama-to-be number two.
“We’ll go back and try to make it really positive for them to want to participate, so if they come over and participate for us, we’ll try again, but we’re not going to force it,” said Amy Schilz, who is on the zoo’s animal care staff.
If Laikipia is pregnant, she and the other mom-to-be will be due this spring.
