According to EPSO, the officer located the suspect and commanded him to comply. However, the suspect refused to cooperate. The officer then deployed his taser and made contact with the suspect.

It was at that moment authorities say the suspect managed to pull out a handgun and fire at least one round toward the officer. The officer then used his handgun to fire at least one shot that struck the suspect.

Medical aid was reportedly given to the suspect at the scene before he was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The officer involved in this incident has been placed on administrative leave as per CSPD’s policy. In addition, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has taken over the investigation and is now the lead agency.
