The 18-year-old who was shot and killed outside a Colorado Springs Family Dollar in October was remembered Monday, Dec. 18.
Dozens of family members and friends of Alex Ainsworth gathered outside the Family Dollar, lighting candles and sharing memories of the 18-year-old.
Alex, along with another person, was shot on Oct. 26 around 2 p.m. outside the Family Dollar near Boulder Street and Prairie Road. He passed away on Oct. 30.
“Now there is a hole in all of our hearts that will never be filled,” said his mother Pamela Ainsworth. “Alex ‘The Tank’ Ainsworth. He was a fighter and he just fought until the end.”
Everyone who knew him said he would have given you the shirt off his back.
“He was always on the go, helping people, always giving, giving, giving. He never gave up. It was like a piece of me died,” said Ainsworth.
With the holidays ahead, his family remembers the fond times, but knows there are rough days ahead.
“It’s going to be a very melancholy Christmas,” said Ainsworth. “One of us is missing!”
Now the family is seeking answers and waiting for justice.
“He brought us all together when he was alive and he’s keeping us together even now,” said Michelle, Alex’s other mom. “We want to know why, why was it ok for the person to do this or anybody, why? There are some things that you can’t take back…this is one of them. You can’t take it back!”
“We will not rest until we have justice for Alex, ever!” said Ainsworth.
The man accused of shooting the two men was identified as 24-year-old Donte Mayo, who was wanted on first-degree murder charges. He turned himself in to authorities in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area the following Tuesday.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page for those who would like to help with expenses.
