COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two people were killed and two others were injured in an active shooter situation that lasted more than five hours at a Colorado Springs townhome complex overnight.

It happened at the Kingsborough Apartments on Academy Boulevard just south of North Carefree Circle. Police first received a call about shots fired in the area around 9 p.m. Monday.

The shooting scene was active for more than five hours, according to police. Officers secured the scene by 3:30 a.m. Police said the situation was confined to one building.

Police said that once they had secured the scene, they found two people–a man and a woman–dead inside a townhome. Police believe the man was the suspect in the shooting.

Two other people sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the shooting. One person was shot in the stomach and the second person was shot in the leg, according to police.

Police said someone fired shots at officers from the second floor of the townhome during the investigation, but no officers were injured.

An emergency alert was sent to residents in the area of Academy Boulevard and Village Road South asking them to remain indoors and shelter in place until further notice. Police said at 3:30 a.m. that the scene is now secure, and there is no threat to the community.

Roads in the area were closed during the investigation, but have since reopened.
