Two arrested in connection with Manitou Springs homicide

Two people have been arrested after a man was fatally assaulted in Manitou Springs early Thursday morning, according to police. 

Police said around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, they got a call about an assault at an apartment at 601 Manitou Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a man lying unconscious in a kiddie pool full of water outside of the apartment. He was taken to the hospital, where he died. 

Police arrested two suspects Thursday morning in connection with the assault. Freddie Crespo, 33, and John Swinehart, 25, were originally charged with attempted murder and assault. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office said these charges have been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Police said Manitou Springs’ last homicide was in 2013.
