Pueblo couple accused of seriously abusing toddler son

A toddler is in critical condition after he was seriously abused by his parents in Pueblo overnight, according to police.

Police said around 3:15 a.m., 20-year-old Faith Hughes arrived at the hospital with her 23-month-old son. The boy was unresponsive and had obvious severe injuries, according to police.

Hughes originally said she and the boy were walking on the east side of Pueblo when they were randomly assaulted by strangers, but that story turned out to be untrue. Police determined the boy’s father, 21-year-old Skylar Chapman, had dropped the pair off at the hospital and then left.

Police interviewed Hughes and Chapman and discovered they had both physically abused the boy. They were both arrested and charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.

Police said the child had multiple brain bleeds and bruises over his entire body. He is in critical and unstable condition at Denver Children’s Hospital.
