Police: Two found dead inside burning home in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Two people were found dead inside a burning home in Colorado Springs Monday afternoon, according to police.

Police said the incident happened in the 300-block of Redwood Drive, which is in the area of Nevada Avenue and Austin Bluffs Parkway.

Police said around 1:33 p.m., they got a call about a shooting in the 300-block of Redwood Drive. When officers arrived, they saw that the house was on fire. The officers entered the home and saw a deceased woman. They were then forced to leave the home due to the smoke and fire.

Firefighters arrived a short time later and quickly extinguished the fire. They found a deceased man inside the home.

Police said the man and woman both had apparent gunshot wounds.

The victims have been identified as Leah Cabrera, 33, and Joshua Cabrera, 35, both of Colorado Springs. Police said they were husband and wife.

The police investigation revealed that Joshua shot Leah and then shot himself. At some point during the incident, the home was set on fire. Investigators found fire accelerant in multiple locations within the home.

Police said an 8-year-old and a 15-year-old also lived in the home. There were not there at the time of the incident.

“Out of concerns for their welfare, no further information will be provided on the children,” police said in a statement.

Police said this is the fifth homicide in Colorado Springs this year. At this time last year, there were 10 homicides.
