No one was injured when an officer fired a shot while investigating a car theft in southeastern Colorado Springs Monday, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, who is investigating the incident.
Deputies said around 10:15 a.m. Monday, officers went to Longfellow Drive, which is in a neighborhood in the area of Murray Boulevard and Airport Road, to investigate a car theft. They took one suspect into custody, but determined a second one was still at large.
Witnesses told police a black SUV in the area may have been associated with the theft. When police made contact with the man in the SUV, his behavior became “evasive and erratic,” according to the sheriff’s office. Around 11:50 a.m., a Colorado Springs police officer fired a single shot. No one was hit or injured.
Police said the man in the SUV has not been charged with any crimes.
The officer who fired the shot, Sgt. Adam Romine, has been put on routine paid administrative leave. Romine has been with the police department since January 2001, according to the department.
