A man is facing multiple charges after law enforcement officers seized 57 horses from his property near Hartsel last month, according to the Park County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said they removed 48 horses from the property on February 21. They removed nine more last week, bringing the total to 57. Several of them were pregnant mares, according to deputies.

The suspect, Mark Walker, has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty.

The horses were taken to Harmony Equine Center for evaluation. The sheriff’s office said most of the horses have gained weight and are showing great improvement. Some are progressing at a slower pace, and will be monitored for other issues. The sheriff’s office said none of the horses have been euthanized or died. Harmony staff members believe the foals have a chance to be born healthy.
