A wanted fugitive was arrested after getting into a fight at a Pueblo hotel Thursday evening, according to police.
Police said around 7:30 p.m., they got a call about a shooting at the Baymont Inn & Suites on North Freeway Road. When officers arrived, the victim told them he had gone to the hotel to confront the fugitive, 34-year-old Mitchell Watkins, about a personal matter. The victim told police he knew Watkins was a fugitive, and he had planned to call police once he confirmed Watkins was at the hotel.
When the victim went to Watkins’ room and confronted him, they got into a fight. Watkins pulled a handgun and pointed it at the victim’s face, according to police. The victim grabbed the gun and was shot in the struggle, according to police. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
When officers arrived in the area, they spotted Watkins entering the Pueblo Mall. Officers chased him out of the building and took him into custody.
Officers searched the area and found a discarded backpack between the hotel and the mall, according to police. The backpack contained a handgun that had been reported stolen out of Colorado Springs.
Watkins was jailed on assault charges.
