A man is facing charges after he accidentally sparked a 15-acre wildfire near Rye Sunday, according to the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies said Christopher Forell, 23, is charged with firing woods or prairie. Forell told deputies he was welding outdoors on his property on Bondurant Road around 5 p.m. Sunday when he noticed grass burning underneath his work area. He tried to put out the fire, but it spread too quickly.

The fire consumed 15 acres of grass, trees, and brush on three properties before firefighters extinguished it. Deputies said no structures were damaged, and no injuries were reported.

Pueblo County is currently under stage two fire restrictions, which prohibit outdoor welding unless it’s done in an area at least 30 feet in diameter that’s cleared of all flammables.
