Man accused of kidnapping woman, assaulting paramedic who stopped to help

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A man is facing multiple charges after he kidnapped and assaulted a woman, then assaulted a paramedic who stopped to help her, according to police. 

Police said the incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Thursday in eastern Colorado Springs. The victim was headed westbound on Highway 24 near Peterson Road when a man flagged her down. The man got into her car, and they continued westbound. When they reached Academy Boulevard, the man became aggressive, according to police. The woman pulled over and tried to get out of her car, but the man pulled her back in. When she was able to get out of the car, the suspect tried to throw her into eastbound traffic, according to police.

Police said American Medical Response paramedics were driving by and saw the incident. When one of the medics tried to help, the suspect assaulted him, according to police. 

The suspect, 39-year-old Clarence Pate, was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery, and assault.

Police said the victim and the medic each sustained minor injuries.
