Deputies seized 10 emaciated horses and two dead horses from a property in eastern El Paso County Monday, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies said on Sunday afternoon, several people called them to report a case of animal neglect on the property, which is located on Slocum Road about three miles north of Highway 94.
When deputies searched the property on Monday, they found 10 horses in various stages of emaciation. They also found two dead horses inside a large barn.
The 10 living horses were seized and taken to a boarding facility. Deputies collected samples from the dead horses to determine if felony charges will be filed.
Deputies said they contacted the owner of the horses. They said charges are pending.
