CAÑON CITY, Colo. — A vehicle stolen from a Colorado Springs homicide victim was found in Cañon City Tuesday, according to police.

Cañon City police said around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday, an officer spotted a “suspicious vehicle” in the parking lot of the Walmart. The officer tried to pull the vehicle over, but it left the area. Police investigated further and learned the vehicle was stolen, and was wanted in connection with a homicide investigation in Colorado Springs.

Later, another Cañon City officer spotted the vehicle in the area of 15th Street and Royal Gorge Boulevard. Officers stopped the vehicle and took the driver, 22-year-old Joseph Tyler Kimsey, into custody.

Police said Kimsey had seven warrants out for his arrest. He was wanted in El Paso County for failure to appear on numerous crimes, including fraud, vehicle theft, dangerous drugs, and several traffic violations.

Colorado Springs police said the stolen vehicle belonged to 27-year-old Ashley Melnyczok, who was found stabbed to death in a northeastern Colorado Springs apartment June 3.

A suspect, 27-year-old Jonathan Nelson, has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Melnyczok’s death.

Colorado Springs police said they don’t know if Kimsey was acquainted with the victim or the suspect.

Kimsey is being held without bond in the Fremont County Jail.
