DENVER — An inmate at ADX in Florence has been sentenced to life for murdering a fellow inmate in 2005.

Richard Santiago, 56, pled guilty Thursday to first-degree murder and murder by a life prisoner. He was sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of release.

Prosecutors said Santiago and co-defendant Silvestre Mayorqui Rivera murdered Manuel Torrez in 2005. Rivera was convicted of first-degree murder and also sentenced to life without the possibility of release.

Prosecutors said Santiago, Rivera, and Torrez were all part of the Mexican Mafia. Rivera and Santiago murdered Torrez while the three were exercising in the recreation area on April 21, 2005. Prosecutors said Rivera and Santiago stomped, kicked, and punched Torrez until he was dead.
